The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
