Seven accused individuals of German far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or are in custody.”
